 #   Notes   Linked to
551 Johnstown, Cambria County, 1780-1941, "Settlements That Failed." p. 406.
Received copy from Sandra Whitehouse Gartenslager, December 1997.

"The Amish settlement near Johnstown existed in southern Cambria County and in northern Somerset County. When the Amish first settled in this area neither county had been established. It was yet part of Bedford County. Somerset County was formed in 1795 and Cambria County in 1804. The first Amishman to settle there was Christian "Schmidt" Miller who arrived in 1780 and purchased a tract of land from the Shawnee Indians. He lived about five miles south of the present city of Johnstown in what now is Conemaugh Township, Somerset County [near Maple Spring Church of the Brethren]. Not only was he the settlement's first resident, with time he would become its first minister and bishop. Following is a short sketch of his life:

Christian (Schmitt) Miller was the pioneer minister and bishop of the Amish Church in the Johnstown district. Samuel Miller, the father of the subject of this sketch, with his wife and children came to America from Canton Berne, Switzerland, landing at Philadelphia, November 1, 1763. They settled in the district of Germantown, Pa. During the Revolutionary War the husband was seized from his services on a canal by a group of soldiers. Whether he took part in the Continental Army or was held as a prisoner by the British is not known. After the war he returned home only to find that his wife had died. The children were then placed in Amish homes. Christian was reared in the home of Hans Beiler, a pioneer bishop of Mifflin County. Beiler was a blacksmith, and Christian being industrious, became so proficient as a welder of iron that he won for himself the name "Schmitt Miller."

Attaining the age of twenty-one, Christian started westward peddling notions. He crossed the Allegheny Mountains and reached Conemaugh Township, Somerset County, where he bought between four and five hundred acres of land. Here he married a young girl by the name of Berkley and erected a cabin in the forest for a home.

Christian was the father of six sons and four daughters. The oldest son was born May 10, 1785. No records of his ordination to the ministry and bishopric are known, but the heritage that he left proves his faithfulness to the cause which he espoused.

He died in 1845, and his remains are moldering in the dust of Somerset county on the farm on which he lived near Jerome, PA. (20).
